Best Answer:

Look on the back of each major appliance where the power cord enters the unit. There should be a sticker or marker. It will give either a number either in Watts or Amps. Amps x Voltage = Watts and Watts x Hours running = Watt-hours If it shows watts on the sticker, then skip the step 1. Step 1: Multiply the amps by the voltage. If you live in the US, use 120 as your voltage. Step 2: Multiply watts times the average number of hours it is turned on or running. That will give you Watt-hours which is what is on your electricity bill.

Another way to accurately gage your consumption is to purchase a device called "kill-a-watt". It measures watts and kilowatt hours as well. It has a 3prong input and 3prong output as well as a large lcd display. see link http://www.amazon.com/P3-International-P4400-Electricity-Monitor/dp/B00009MDBU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8s=electronicsqid=1222769760sr=8-1

I am agree with Mr. joe he forgot to tell one more step that is the electricity bills are measured with units(it is nothing but 1000 Whr or 1 kWhr) ie 1 unit = 1kWhr (or) 1000 Whr. Further you should aware of cost for 1unit then only you are able to pay in a right contribution.(the details you can get from local EB)
